After Andrew saw the Harlem Hot Shots perform in his senior year of high school, he fell in love with Lindy Hop. As his graduation present, he attended Herrang Dance Camp in Sweden, the biggest dance camp in the world, to learn the basics of the dance. After graduating from high school in Beijing, he moved to California to dance and attend college. Andrew's huge smile can be seen from across the room and his unique and expressive style makes dancing with him an experience that can't be explained with words. He has placed in numerous competitions at the highest levels, but doesn't really care, as he just loves to dance. (written by Mary :)
He started out folk dancing in a friend's back yard over a decade ago, and now, he is a Jazzman. Conrad brings a very fun, unique, and raw approach to traditional Jazz dance and music. He’s known for his musicality, spark, rhythm, and has the uncanny ability of being good at just about anything. He is proficient in many of the Jazz age dances including, Lindy Hop, Charleston, Peabody, and Turkey Trot, to name some. He loves fun, creativity, and thinking outside the box. He keeps fun, the real heart of original Jazz music and dancing, central to his art because fun is the most important thing about it all. His charisma and trademark grin are noticeable wherever he competes, performs, teaches, and DJ's. He has won awards in many competitions all over the US of A, but for him, that's nothing compared to sharing a dance with someone. He also plays bass, and has played with such musicians as Jonathan Stout and Seattle’s The Careless Lovers.
The only dance experience Mary had as a child was when she attended a month long, after-school ballet program that culminated with a performance of her in a giant, stuffed dinosaur suit. And, at her first swing class in college, she couldn't quite figure out which way to turn on a Swingout! She did eventually figure it out, and ever since that class has been dance crazy! To understand and explore movement, she took every dance class she could...Ballet, Modern, Jazz, Hip Hop, Tap, Salsa and Ballroom. After graduating, she moved back home to Los Angeles and she attends, competes, performs, teaches and DJ's at every event she can, and then blogs about it every opportunity she gets (Art and Dancing)! Playfulness, hot rhythms, and yummy connection is what she strives to create with her lead. She loves talking about dancing, and can usually be found dance-geeking-out wherever there is someone swinging out (or figuring out how to :)
Melissa never thought much about swing dancing until a friend convinced her to attend her first dance event in 2011. Then she was hooked! Now if you spend too much time with her, she may just start showing you some of her favorite dance videos on YouTube. She loves to travel and compete for dance, as well as use online communities so she can learn and share ideas with dancers from around the world. Partner communication, creativity, and laughter on the dance floor are what inspire her the most -- especially when dancing to a great song. She loves exploring musicality, and can sometimes be seen behind the DJ booth spinnin' some of her favorite tunes. Melissa hopes that through teaching she can help others experience the same joy that dancing has brought her, and hopes to help the dance community grow. She loves to be asked to dance, so if you're looking for Melissa on the dance floor, just look for the girl wearing a bow!
